Idios

No, I didn’t forget my “t”.

A few excerpts from the book I’m currently reading (Word Mysteries and Histories: From Quiche to Humble Pie):

“The word idiom, like idiot, is derived ultimately from Greek idios, “private”.

“…Idiotes, the source of our word idiot… originally meant a private citizen in contrast to a public official.”

A lot of our public officials would seem less like idiots if they remained idiotes.

  1. Dixie Says:

Wow. You’ve officially become a word nerd. Yet, still not as bad as an idiot. 😉
